Reverse Engineering

My personal interpretation on reverse engineering is that it is great with redesigning a better product to fit your target consumer. This Engineering technique is practiced throughout the industry because it brings in the people that the industry wants to buy, or lifts sales with curtain people such as senior citizens. With reverse engineering you are completely aware of the problems with the consumer, rather than with forward engineering you have to wait for feedback which can slow up sales. This technique keeps loyal consumers by keeping the same parts just making it better for everybody else, like upgrading in other words.

Our Product

With this project we had to figure out how to redesign this Sanyo Television to fit the needs of senior citizens. We had to keep in mind of the ones who have bad eyesight, the weak, it had to be cheaper and also the fact that they have grand children that may come over and want to hook up their game or watch a movie. These criteria pretty much paved a way in this project, with the criteria we had to redesign and update some things with the Television. With the screen the old models picture was hard and difficult to see from a distance so we replaced it with an LED screen which projects brighter and gives a clearer picture, this screen is also cheaper. With this LED screen it completely replaces the screen from the old model, which is all glass and completely fills up the shell of the TV. This replacement doesn’t only give a better picture but it also make the product lighter for the senior citizens who do not have anybody in the house to move the TV around for them. We added a input plug in on the side of the TV and flattened the back so that if the consumer wanted to hang it on the wall, or wanted it against the wall; they would have more space around the TV also the plug in on the side for a game or DVD player would be easier to get to rather than having to move the TV every time the person wanted to plug in something. With this project we had to break down the old model to see what we could upgrade from it. We illustrated the design and components of the old model on our engineering grid paper and researched how the components worked and what they did to come up with better ideas for them in our new design.

Feed Back

This project really opened my eyes on the engineering and product development industry and how they care for their consumers. They have to take countless hours to design, build, and research new ideas on building a product to fit the consumer’s needs, to just do it all over again in the end. We had fun tearing down the parts of the TV and seeing how old some the components in the TV were. This was a great experience and we all enjoyed it, Just remember to wear your goggles!
